In no order, just based on my continued viewing of these movies over the years:

The Matrix
Field of Dreams
Terminator 2
American Ultra
Groundhog Day
Hunger Games (I'm counting the series as 1 because I like them all together as one story)
The Breakfast Club
Jurassic Park
Avatar
Inception (with honorable mention to Twister as list limited to 10)

I'll try this, but honestly, there are so many absolutely wonderful movies out there that I'll make a list and then look at it ten minutes later, only to realize that I left out 7 or 8 other movies that I'd considered even better.

Jurassic Park 1993 (took my son to see this when he was 10; I was absolutely stunned by it - to me, it was a movie game-changer).

The Best Years of our Lives 1946 An earlier movie, but such a wonderful story told around the end of WWII.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation 1989 This movie is by far my go-to movie for the holidays (it even beats out It's a Wonderful Life).

My Friend Flicka 1943 This movie is by far a favourite of mine. I have always loved horses, always dreamed of having one of my own, and the lead character (Ken, played by a young Roddy McDowell) seemed to capture the same spirit I had as a child - a dreamer, not doing well in school (not because I couldn't understand, but because my head was always in the clouds), a disciplinarian father...so much of it resonated with me that the first time I saw it, I realized that for the first time that I wasn't the only one with such traits.

Old Yeller 1957 An amazing film for any dog lover, and completely heart-wrenching. It became very difficult for me to watch several years ago after I had my own 'yeller dog' with the same type of personality, tenacity, and devotion that Old Yeller displayed.

Marley & Me 2008 In the vein of Old Yeller, another canine movie that touched my heart and soul. I saw this in the theater on Christmas Day, just three years before I lost my own girl, Kaya....I knew she was getting older, and I dreaded the day that I would lose her. And even though Kaya wasn't a lab, she did resemble Marley in terms of colour and - with personality - her quirkiness (she was the biggest avocado thief I ever met). Toward the end of the movie, where John had to say goodbye to Marley, and then when the family got together and buried him in the garden...oh, how I wept. This movie was laugh-out-loud funny, uplifting, and one of the saddest movies I've ever seen, all combined into one.

Alien 1979 Saw this in the theater; had no idea walking in what it was about, other than a sci-fi thriller of some sort. This movie scared the bejeezus out of me! Extremely well done, very suspenseful, and one of the best sci-fi movies I've seen. Aliens stands right up there with this one as well, but the impact that the original Alien had on me was tremendous, esp. since I walked into the movie theater expecting to see a mediocre horror.

Schindler's List 1993 Disturbing. Humanitarian. Horrific. Three words to attempt to describe Spielberg's epic nod to Oskar Schindler, and to his painfully real depiction of the indescribable atrocities that took place under Hitler's regime. A haunting story that one can never forget.

Terminator 1984 While I could put Terminator 2 in with this one (or even ahead of it, in some respects) I think that the original Terminator was so unique and so well-done with regard to special FX (remember, this was 1984) that it still stands alone today as a classic. Not only was the story intriguing, but I also appreciated the humour that was interwoven throughout, something that is often lost in action/drama movies today. It was one of those 'keeps you on the edge of your seat' from beginning to end flicks, and well worth watching again. And again.

Rocky 1976 Sylvester Stallone's classic about an underdog who makes it to the top by persevering, even when he's lost faith. I never tire of this one, and my respect for Stallone - and the story of how he made this movie come to life - will forever remain up there.

I just put it on my watch list - thanks for the heads' up!

No, but it sounds super interesting. I've just looked it up too and added it to my watch list even though it's not my favorite era for movies. Thanks!

I like your list a lot but I must disagree with your pick for Worst Movie Ever. I believe it is this one - with "eight men, one girl...and a bomb!" It IS a bomb.

Though I have to admit, that this film my uncle produced is pretty darn bad too (as were most of his movies):

It was cool to go on the set with him though. How many people can say they had breakfast with Slim Pickens and Jaclyn Smith at the same time?

I watched this movie just the other night. I'm a huge Jake Gyllenhaal fan, and his performance was (not unpredictably) amazing. Must admit, when the movie ended I was left - at first - with a sense of disappointment; it wasn't what I was expecting at all. But once I gathered my thoughts and truly let the heart of the movie envelop me, I have to say, there was so much powerful emotion going on with Amy Adams' character in the final scene, and so much haunting undertone to the entire story, and with all three main characters, that once I appreciated the message, I realized just how great this movie really is.

I agree, this one should definitely be listed.

Thanks for your response. Honestly, Nocturnal Animals disturbed me a bit on first viewing (but I love movies like that; the more sick and twisted the better), and it’s one of those the viewer needs to watch more than once. I thibk it’s an excellent movie for several reasons. All the acting is first rate; I love how (director) Ford blends the present story with the story of the book she’s reading, as well as the real-life flashbacks. The cinematography and editing is among the best I’ve ever seen, too.

Excellent, excellent film.
