With Hollywood's fascination with re-making every movie under the sun, I am surprised no studio has decided to take this one on. The cheaply made, corny 80s movie seems to have taken on a "cult classic" status. IDK, maybe there is some "ownership" rights or something that are tied up in court. The closest we will probably come to it will probably be John Carter and you know how that turned out.
I suspect it's for all the reasons you stated: The last version was so bad, Jon Carter flopped, and there are probably ownership disputes.
A studio exec's first question is going to be: Should we just do our own space opera that we own, or is there enough of a vested Flash Gordon fanbase that it would warrant paying for the rights? If there is a die-hard Flash Gordon fanbase out there, I doubt any of them are below the age of 60.
Besides, Freddie Mercury is no longer with us. So who would sing the music?

That soundtrack was awesome! lol
Buck Rogers also comes to mind (minus phallic-head Twiggy)
