“Hollywood continues to be challenged by gender and ethnic diversity,” said Alex Nogales, NHMC president and CEO. “Our upcoming demonstrations are only the first of what will become increasingly aggressive wake-up calls to Hollywood studios to end institutionalized racism against Latinos. By targeting the Academy Awards, we’re serving notice to the motion picture industry that we’re not asking for equity anymore. We’re demanding it.”
Judging by the Wikipedia information, it's gotten better by leaps and bounds since 2000.
Are most nominees white? Yes. But except for a handful of people like Denzel, Meryl, John Williams, etc. the majority of people in the movie business are lucky to get one nomination in their entire career.
Imo, it's not that they are racist, it's bc most of the films have a lower budget and Oscar campaigns cost studios a lot of money. Unless you have a sure fire contender, it's hard to justify the expense. It's not about if you're the best that year, it's politics and schmoozing. For example, Laurie Metcalf had been seen as a lock for lady bird but Janney is getting all the pre Oscar wins. Some people have speculated that since Metcalf is busy preparing for a play, she's unable to go to the schmoozing events while Janney is. It might be simply that Janney is better or it could be politics.
There's only 5 slots. Tons of people get overlooked. Not getting a nomination doesn't mean you are denied a career. In fact, Oscars are known to kill careers.
I wish people would stop making it an Oscars problem. It's not the Oscars, it's Hollywood in general. The roles just aren't there.
