Which John Wayne film do you prefer: ED was a remake of RB (only seven years later), but I think ED was a much better movie even though it is almost exactly the same.

Rio Bravo
  • Walter Brennan
  • Dean Martin
  • Ricky Nelson

El Dorado
  • Robert Mitchum
  • James Caan
  • Arthur Hunnicutt

There was a third remake: Rio Lobo, but it did not track as closely.

Oh please, Rio Bravo of course. My favorite film and a classic.

I preferred the daytime action scenes of Rio Bravo over the nighttime action of El Dorado.

Both were among my favorite John Wayne Westerns but I liked Rio Bravo better.

Wow, I'm outnumbered! I liked Mitchum playing the sheriff much more than Dean Martin.

RIO BRAVO remains one of the best Westerns ever made.

I can see that, but I do think that it was one of Dino's best movie performances.

I make that match up a wash. In this case the singer (Ricky Nelson) playing Colorado out did the actor (James Caan) playing Mississippi.

Rio Bravo
El Dorado
Rio Lobo

Howard Hawks made many good movies but had a tendency to repeat himself didn't he?
Rio Bravo and El Dorado were better than average with Rio Bravo edging it by a half star IMO. I do like Robert Mitchum as Sheriff. Walter Brennan as Stumpy is simply the best. And he had his own hit music single "Old Rivers" in 1962, perhaps he was jealous of Ricky Nelson?

If Howard Hawks made fifty movies would the gunman sidekick be named for all fifty states? Or would he stop before naming one Carolina, Virginia, Hawaii or Pennsylvania??

I prefer Charlene Holt / Verna Stavely (El Dorado) to Angie Dickinson / Angeline Brown (Rio Bravo) but I'm not picky either will do
