Well it has been a decade since "minority report" he hasn't exactly been killing it like he was in the 80's & 90's.

though the last Jurassic park was good. but for awhile now he has been making "yawn fests" like Schindlers list.

I really liked AI and minority report, war of the worlds was ok, did not really care for the others, but none of that list (including the 3 I liked) did as well and became as iconic as say jaws, raiders of the lost ark, ET, back to the future, Jurassic park etc etc etc

Where they were instant smash hits among critic and fans alike.

All that counts is if you liked it. Critics? Doesn't matter. Box office? Smox office. .....

I wasn't aware Spielberg was in need of a comeback?

He directed Lincoln which won Best Actor for 2012 & was nominated for Best Picture, Bridge of Spies which won Best Actor for 2015, and The Post which was didn't win but was nominated for Best Picture and Best Actress for 2017.

I'd say he's still near the top of his game.

He has a few more duds in the 2000s than he did in his run from the 80s-90s (The BFG, Adventures of TinTin, War Horse). He doesn't quite have the box office heft that he used to. They're no longer asking him to direct the summer blockbusters like Avengers or whatever... Back in the 80s & 90s Spielberg used to own the box office with Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, etc..., but he's still one of the best directors and capable of Oscar-worthy productions.

In the 2010s, Lincoln (2012) is the only movie that grossed over $100 million, and it's not like he hasn't tried with Tintin and BFG, among others. This movie is clearly intended to make money from a wide audience, instead of winning awards. It should cross $100m, but I'm not sure how about much beyond that.

Quality-wise his output is fine.

I never read source novels of fiction works, so have no idea about this movie other than the general plot line I read online.

I wouldn't mind watching it. When I first saw the trailer I thought meh, but seeing as they licensed a quite a few memorable characters from movies and videogames to be in this movie, why not.

The movie did cost about 175 million dollars to make, so it has its work cut out. I haven't sensed any sort of prebuzz for his movie personally.

I haven't read the book yet, but it was well-received and a best-seller when it came out in 2011. The book was geared toward the teenage sci-fi market similar to Twilight, Hunger Games, Divergent... but somewhat more sophisticated & a kind of homage to gamers.

It'll have a little more than 3 weeks to pull it off. Ready Player One drops on March 30. Avengers - Infinity War drops on April 27th. Once that comes out it'll suck up all the box office for the following month, with the next big drops being Deadpool 2 and Solo - A Star Wars Story in late May.

I give Ready Player One a 40% chance of making a decent profit... it will need the reviews to be good & generate buzz or I expect it'll flop quickly. From the trailer I get a visual vibe similar to Cloud Atlas or Jupiter Ascending, neither of which were great, although this budget is much bigger and Spielberg is better than the Wachowskis. The trailer looks like Warner Bros. is aiming at the same Hunger Games type market with the movie, but with a nostalgia factor that may appeal to adults - using motifs like Iron Giant, the Back to the Future DeLorean, etc...
