My teenage daughter and her group of nerd friends saw it and loved it.

I thought he was good in the real world as he was supposed to be a socially awkward geek. and in the club scene he was true to having "a little" more confidence the book explains it better.

Since the acting was so poor, all the money for the film was obviously spent on CGI, but most of it goes by so fast you have no time to savor the scenery, buildings, etc., so it's a fast-paced blur most of the time.
To me the speed makes that stuff look cooler if you slow it down to much any flaws in rendering are noticeable I saw no flaws in the CGI because of all the stuff wizzing around. remember magic is the art of misdirection.

As someone who was a kid/tween/teen during Spielberg's prime(before he started making boring movies like "shendlers list" and "Lincoln") I found all the references enjoyable.

My only complaint with this movie is it was way too short, it should have gotten the lord of the rings treatment.

And that they stole one of wades plot arcs and gave it to art3mis.

Also a book nod: Piers Anthony's Split Infinity (Apprentice Adept #1).

Spoiler
when he first enters the Oasis, they hover over a circular arena with outlying pillars, and avatars emerging form the center.

I'm looking forward to this one... ordered the 4K Steelbook from BB yesterday. Reviews say the video/audio quality are outstanding... should be a fun watch on my 65" OLED and Dolby Atmos system.
