I saw it first run in NYC in 1968. I was one of about a dozen in the audience that understood it. "Ice Station Zebra" had bigger signage on the great white way.

2001 is great cinematic art.

But 2010 is actually a much better story.

I couldn't have said it better myself:

I saw 2001 way back on first release. It was one of the most amazing films I have ever seen. Confusing in parts, but a fabulous, unforgettable movie. If it comes around here on re-release, I will take my wife to see it, as she never has before.

It is full of magnificent scenes that remain in the memory. The cave men creature throwing a bone weapon into the air, which instantly changes into a scene out in space with a revolving space station. The soundtrack filled with classical music. It is truly an experience, and very different to other films of it's time.
