I watched THOR: RAGNAROK with my kids today. You want to see some bad acting? Watch Kate Blanchett in this movie. And Blanchett is a great actress, but her performance in this movie was Raspberry-worthy. But in all fairness, I don't think it was her fault. Lawrence Olivier could not have pulled off some of that dialogue.

My favorite movie to watch for bad acting is BILLY JACK. Almost every lead in the movie is painfully bad. Some of the background characters can act. But the leads? Hilarious.

Good actors? Mel Gibson 30 years ago. Brad Pitt. Adrien Brody. Many others.

You're kidding, right? Tom cruise is a great actor.

Have you seen Collateral? One of the best portrayals I've ever seen of a sociopath hitman.

Cruise has 3 Oscar nominations.

Just because many of his movies are "popcorn entertainment" doesn't mean the man can't act.

I'm currently in the middle of Born on the Fourth of July, and it's hard to watch. His performance is outstanding in this movie, heartbreaking. I can't believe I've never seen this before.

That said, I do know what you are others are saying about certain actors "playing one character" or lacking a range. That doesn't automatically discredit anyone.

I saw someone mention Nicolas Cage. Watch Leaving Las Vegas.

To me, bad acting is like pornography. I know it when I see it.
Not just her. Everybody in the Twilight Saga. Lol

And what's funny about that is she was pretty good to very good in little gems like Speak and the Cake Eaters before it. And after it in Clouds of Sils Maria, for which she won the French Cesar, and Personal Shopper.

So it was really about Twilight and not so much her abilities.

The Bella Swan character in Twilight was supposed to be a bland and dull character so she really did what was required of it. Plus that character had brown eyes so she wore brown contacts. Her actual eye color is a lovely shade of green.

Her very first film, A Safety of Objects, I think she was 9 or 10, was another good performance.

If you thought she was great in COSM you need to see Personal Shopper. There were a number of critics who were upset about both films not getting recognized by the Academy for Oscar noms.

Olivier did one cheesy movie I remember, the original Clash of the Titans.

Cruise has done some good ones. Minority Report comes to mind.

It's interesting you bring up the Sopranos because Gandolfini had a small film career as well.

Welcome to the Rileys is one I would recommend. Doug Riley is nothing like Tony Soprano! And, interestingly since she has been mentioned, his main co-star in this movie was Kristen Stewart who held her own against James G. because he was a force of nature.

The surest way to know if a particular actor is giving a bad performance is really simple, you notice it in a bad way that distracts from the scene and the movie. The tones, the mannerisms, the delivery, all seem false and forced as if reciting from a script, very unnatural.

A good performance is something that is natural for the camera and audience, doesn't seem forced even when the scene requires intensity of emotions, good acting is noticeable because you are wowed by it during and after the movie is over.
