There are lots of great coming-of-age movies about boys. But precious few good ones about girls. Maybe this will start a new trend?

Looks good but isn't this basically the same thing as Stand by Me? I think humanity may have run out of ideas for original movies.

Yeah, I thought much the same thing. I'm sure the pitch meeting for this movie went something like, "What if we did STAND BY ME ... but with girls?"

Still, that in itself isn't a bad thing. If you're gonna steal, at least steal good stuff.

Depends on what you mean by "original," I guess, but I don't think so. There are lots of really creative people with great ideas in Hollywood. The problem is that most of them have no money, so they have to rely on studios and other producers to finance the projects, and if there is one thing studio execs and producers do NOT like, it is risk. They want a safe bet.

Example:
KNIVES OUT. Now KNIVES OUT was certainly not "original" if by that you mean: Like nothing I have ever seen before. It was very much in the tradition of Agatha Christie, only with a heavy does of humor thrown in. In style and tone, it was a movie whose like I have not seen since at least the '80s. So I wouldn't call it original. But it was definitely nothing like any other movie you currently see on the big screen.

Where The Crawdads Sing is a coming of age movie about a girl, and it's unusual and set in an unusual setting as well.

Here are some more excellent "coming of age" movies about girls:

Thirteen
Lady Bird
My Girl
Little Voice
Juno
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Heavenly Creatures
The House of the Spirits
The Man In The Moon
Little Darlings
Clueless
Sixteen Candles
Endless Love
Girl, Interrupted
An Education
Whale Rider

There are a lot more as well.

Oh and this one, I already mentioned it but wow, it's great:

Oh, and the Little Voice I mentioned earlier is the one from 1998 and also stars a young Ewan McGregor - in a very unusual role.
