Great movie, but there is one scene that is as bad or worse than any "gore" I have ever seen onscreen.

I recommend Jacob's Ladder (1990). Elizabeth Pena and Tim Robbins acted their parts well and it is definitely suspenseful!

These four movies have not been previously mentioned. They are very good IMO.

Bad Influence (1990). Rob Lowe and James Spader.

Flatliners (1990). Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and William Baldwin. It is much better than the 2017 remake!

Sleeping with the Enemy (1991). Julia Roberts and Patrick Bergin.

Spellbinder (1988). Kelly Preston, Audra Lindley, Tim Daly and Rick Rossovich.

Recent ones I liked

Frailty (2002) (it's "gory" but it isn't shown because of the rating)
Shutter Island (2010)
Nightcrawler (2014)
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

Prisoners (2013) has blood but no "slasher flick" brutality/gore

I would approach these recommendations with caution if you don’t like gore. “Psycho” and the second “Body Snatchers” have some gory moments. And my understanding is that “Silence of the Lambs,” “Halloween,” and (despite what’s said above) “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” have gory scenes.

For me, non-gory suspense would encompass pre-Psycho Hitchcock in particular. And they’re not gory at all. No blood, body parts, etc. at all.

The only gore in PSYCHO is some chocolate syrup running down the tub drain.

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS has some disturbing images --- the man's face on the dog's body comes to mind --- but hardly what I would call gore.

SILENCE OF THE LAMBS has an autopsy scene, but hardly what I would call gory. The scene where Lecter escapes is a bit bloody, but hardly what I would call gore.

HALLOWEEN has no blood at all. None.

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE definitely has some disturbing scenes, but hardly any blood at all. In fact, the sound affects are actually more visceral than the images. Even the famed meat hook scene shows very little. It's all implied.

I think a lot of these do count as horror, it's just not all horror movies have lots of gore in them.
