I haven't seen some of these and need to check them out! I feel a girl movie night coming on.

Hey, how 'bout this one - The Other Sister:
https://imdb.com/title/tt0123209/

Unique in that it's got a great cast and also is about the coming of age of a mentally challenged daughter.

I love The Secret Lives of Bees — a great coming of age movie with a parallel theme highlighting racial inequities during the 1960’s in the South.

I have actually seen LITTLE DARLINGS and FOXES, though it has been years. I remember liking FOXES much more than LITTLE DARLINGS, which I remember as being kind of a girl-centered MEATBALLS, only centered around sex. They're not bad movies, but they are exactly the kind of movies I'm trying to avoid:

Why is it that when film-makers make a coming-of-age story for boys, it is about learning the world can be an unfair and scary place, learning the value of friendship and courage and sacrifice? (See STAND BY ME, THE OUTSIDERS, AMERICAN GRAFFITI.)

But when film-makers make a coming-of-age story for girls, it is usually about having sex or falling in love? Even movies written by women seem to fall into this trap.

Some great suggestions so far, including many I've never seen. Thanks, everyone!

What does the "transition from childhood to adulthood" usually entail? You guessed it.

Getting laid doesn't make anyone an adult. Frats are filled with main-children who are most definitely not adults.

Oh, stop. The first time you did it, you woke up the next day and went "Now I feel like a MAN!"
