With the passage of time, it's easy to forget (or not know) how incredible some movies were for their time. E.T. is considered such a movie.

Today, it’s all too easy to forget how extraordinary E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial was when it appeared on the scene back in 1982, virtually out of the blue, and surrounded by an air of promotional mystery.
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial: 35th Anniversary Edition (4K UHD Review)

What movies have left the strongest impression on you from a purely visual (and musical, perhaps) perspective?

Krull
Excalibur
The Neverending Story
Heavy Metal
Pirates of the Caribbean
The Beastmaster
Hercules (Lou Ferrigno)
Jason & The Argonauts, Clash Of the Titans

I do think The Wizard Of Oz probably trumps all the above for capturing the public's imagination, and becoming interwoven into the culture more than any other. It was my favorite as a little kid, and I liked Chitty Chitty Bang Bang too. However, I think Wizard of Oz has slowly faded from it's peak around 30 to 40 years ago, and Chitty Chitty is almost forgotten today.

"What movies have left the strongest impression on you from a purely visual (and musical, perhaps) perspective?"

Many movies have stunning short sequences, but few carry it out throughout the majority of the film. The opening sequence in "Out of Africa" and the last century "Murder on the Orient Express" are examples. Off the top of my head:

Kurosawa's "Dreams"

"2001:ASO"

"Lawrence of Arabia"

"Fantasia"

"Metropolis"

Some of the early "Imax" films, like "Blue Planet"

The original "Star Wars"

"Heavy Metal"

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) I love everything about that movie - the action and the romance - the entire atmosphere created!
