You just don't see it anymore, but in real life, a lot of people still do it, so I wonder why the movies and tv shy away from it now. You could say it's because of public health influence, but you see so many characters in movies and TV, drink and do drugs and have unprotected sex, that I wonder if that is the real reason.

What do you think?

I can’t say I’ve noticed a decline in smoking in film and television.

In the U.S. less than 20% smoke and most of those are older and/or lower income. The prime demographic for movies do not smoke. In films, mostly it's only bad people who smoke.

Yeah but that's just it though. It wasn't "cool" back in the 90s and you still see a lot of 90s characters doing it compared to now. Plus I really believe that less than 20% statistic is gathered incorrectly, and I feel it's more like 30%

It was less "uncool" in the '90's than now.

And unfortunately it doesn't matter what you think is right or wrong...some things are factual. If you're not in the U.S. then that's your own issue.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preval...co_consumption
According to the CDC, as of 2015, a total of 15.1% of U.S. adults (16.7% of men and 13.6% of women) smoke, which is down from 20.9% a decade earlier.[41]

I'd be willing to bet that your perceptions are way off due to your age and skewed viewing of various movie genres. Maybe you can find an academic study to prove your case...or not.

Well I'm going by what I see and it seems more than 20% when people are outdoors on the street and all. The last time I saw it was in Skyfall, and I was so surprised, a character who actually smokes, we haven't seen this in who knows how long! But that is just my experience and from what I see.

Jesus H Ch|st! You're just admitting your own perceptions are skewed. Oh...you may be interested to know that your own premise (based on your perceptions) is likely wrong:

So much for this thread!

Any discussion has to be based on specific timeframes because obviously it ebbs and flows with advertising dollars for product placement, social pressure, possible impact on movie ratings, etc.

The good thing is, you don't have to just wonder and muse about these things...Google is your friend!

You tend to watch a lot of older movies (based off your posts) which is why you probably don’t think smoking is as prevalent in movies today,, but I can assure you it is. I notice it in a lot of new movies.

Yeah. Some group was complaining a few years ago about the number of movie characters smoking in the films that year.
