I did a search and amazingly didn't find a thread (I was expecting to) about what your favourite movie ever is. There probably is one, but if there is blame the search tool!
Anyway, mine would be 'Midnight Cowboy', but, not so much for the story, but because it's such an excellent time capsule of a time, has one of the best openings in movie history, has the groovy scene in the Warhol jungle gym, and Dustin Hoffman is unforgettable in it. It's one of the few films I watch again and again (probably seen it about 10 times).
The 80's Original. So much suspense, And mystery. That along with the score by Mark Isham and the desert scenery made for a one of a kind film. And then there's Rutger Hauer, Who's villain was almost supernatural in nature.
And the french fry scene that gave new meaning to "finger food".
Death In Venice. Because of all the beauty I get to watch (and listen to), because it's the perfect complement to a literary masterpiece (the original Thomas Mann's novelette) and because I first saw it in my early teens and it left an indelible imprint on me in several key ways.
Yes, I know now that it's far from perfect (the parts where the Apollonian vs. Dionysian dichotomy is discussed should have been much better -to be fair to the original story-, or quite simply left out), but it will always be my favourite film no matter what.
Because Atticus Finch was the most ethical, moral, and compassionate fictional character ever that I can think of. And he was so beautifully portrayed by Gregory Peck; I can't imagine any other actor of that time who could have pulled off such a stunning portrayal.
There are so many films I love, that I go back to like the aformentioned TOUCH OF EVIL.
Probably the most fantastically shot opening to a film ever. But, my more modern
favourite is Robert Redfords THE NATURAL. Such a beautiful film, I can go back to it
every couple of years and watch it again.
