Oh okay, well I don't think the movie correctly counts as blaxploitation, cause there was no exploitation in the movie.

So what to you is a blaxploitation film?

I don't think you know what the genre means.

The first paragraph of the wikipedia article on blaxploitation should be enough to redefine blaxploitation for you. "...black characters and communities were the heroes and subjects of film and television, rather than sidekicks or victims of brutality."

Oh okay, I guess it is blaxploitation then. I thought it was where the community was exploited, where as in Set It Off, it doesn't treat the community in an exploitative way. When I think exploitation, I think style over substance, where as Set It Off has more substance than the usual action movie, which is why I thought it was one of the best of the 90s.

Set It Off is one of my favorite movies.

I truly feel that all of the actors in this movie were deserving of Oscar nominations, their performances were extraordinary. I think the perception that this movie was some 'exploitation' crime/heist movie contributed to the general lack of respect this movie deserved. It was much more than that, it was just a powerful, moving experience.

Yeah that's how I feel about it too, is that it deserved a lot more and for some reason people saw it as just another movie.

I saw it, it was great. I went to a matinee on my day off and there was maybe about 20 people in the theater. Everyone was black except me. I had read about the plot beforehand and thought it was cool. But yes it’s a film that in the mid 90’s meant something briefly and then it was gone.

Well why is it that a movie like Thelma and Louise for example, is remembered a lot better than this one. Both movies are about women have to resort to crime that ends in tragedy, but I thought this one was a lot more dramatic and intense.

I don't think you understand the extent of American racial segregation last century.

What's that got to do with the movie? Are you saying it had an effect on the movie's success?
