I've been trying to find romantic older films but keep coming up with romantic comedies instead which I don't care for. So I'm looking for recommendations.
Why pre-1955? Because there are other romantic movies that came out in the 1950s that came out after 1955. Also, have you tried googling?
But here's another one that I saw from the 1940s, which I thought was very good:
They’re not expressly romantic movies, but Bogart and Bacall damn near set the screen on fire in their first two movies together, “To Have and Have Not” and “The Big Sleep.” I never get tired of watching it.
Ironpony, I hope you’re reading this thread. “Big Sleep” is the greatest plotless movie ever made.... well, ok, maybe it’s got scenes and things happen and people shoot at each other, but as Roger Elbert points out in the review linked below, the characters spend a lot of time talking about two people who never appear, one of them is killed but no one ever learns who kills him,and in general there are more holes in the plot than in good Swiss cheese.
And it does not matter. The three screenwriters (one of whom was William Faulkner, who sure didn’t worry about plot in his books) couldn’t, or didn’t bother, with a plot.
My favorite scene doesn’t have Bacall...it’s Bogie with the deceptively mousy-looking bookstore clerk (Dotothy Malone), drinking together while on a, well I guess you could call it a stakeout.
Thank you for all the great movies listed in this thread. "Brief Encounter," "I Know Where I'm Going!" and "Now, Voyager" are highly recommended to anyone who appreciates classic movies, quality writing and less gimmick-y stories.
