No, I agree with you.
New ones too gratuitous....

My mother used to absolutely love this 1954 Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman movie:

Magnificent Obsession

Why pre-1955? Because there are other romantic movies that came out in the 1950s that came out after 1955. Also, have you tried googling?

But here's another one that I saw from the 1940s, which I thought was very good:

Notorious (1946)

Additionally, here's what I got from googling:

They’re not expressly romantic movies, but Bogart and Bacall damn near set the screen on fire in their first two movies together, “To Have and Have Not” and “The Big Sleep.” I never get tired of watching it.

Ironpony, I hope you’re reading this thread. “Big Sleep” is the greatest plotless movie ever made.... well, ok, maybe it’s got scenes and things happen and people shoot at each other, but as Roger Elbert points out in the review linked below, the characters spend a lot of time talking about two people who never appear, one of them is killed but no one ever learns who kills him,and in general there are more holes in the plot than in good Swiss cheese.

And it does not matter. The three screenwriters (one of whom was William Faulkner, who sure didn’t worry about plot in his books) couldn’t, or didn’t bother, with a plot.

My favorite scene doesn’t have Bacall...it’s Bogie with the deceptively mousy-looking bookstore clerk (Dotothy Malone), drinking together while on a, well I guess you could call it a stakeout.

And while I’m remembering great, sexy old movie images...Ava Gardner and her black gloves with Burt Lancaster in “The Killers.”

One of my absolute favorite romantic dramas is:

To Have and Have Not (1944)

This is the movie in which Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart fall in love, for real. And you can actually see it happen onscreen!

"Just put your lips together and blow"

The Best Years of Our Lives isn't billed as a romance, but it has three great romantic storylines in it.

Wuthering Heights and Now, Voyager are also very good.

Thank you for all the great movies listed in this thread. "Brief Encounter," "I Know Where I'm Going!" and "Now, Voyager" are highly recommended to anyone who appreciates classic movies, quality writing and less gimmick-y stories.

I still like "It Happened One Night". I know it's more comedy, but for the 30's it was great, and it still holds up.

Just a few years outside your pre 1955 is 'Vertigo'. One of the great stories of obsessive love.
