Talented actor who seemed to play a number of roles as a disturbed person - though I'm no expert. Just my take on it. Seems like many actors have a proclivity towards taking roles that somewhat mimic the real life persona of the actor.
Clint Eastwood really is somewhat like many of his characters.
John Wayne wasn't acting according to his daughter.

Just a youngish theory been wondering about.
Agreed. Many roles were of men and their various predicaments and crimes.
He was one those supporting players that was a consistent scene-stealer. In The Talented Mr. Ripley, whenever he was playing opposite Matt Damon, you forgot Damon was in the room.
Did not realize that Scent of a Woman (1992) was his 5th film!
My PSH list:
Twister (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), The Big Lebowski (1998), Happiness (1998), Patch Adams (1998), Magnolia (1999), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Almost Famous (2000), Punch-Drunk Love (2002), Red Dragon (2002), Cold Mountain (2003), Along Came Polly (2004), Capote (2005), The Savages (2007), Doubt (2008), Synecdoche, New York (2008), Money Ball (2011), The Master (2012), A Late Quartet (2012).
"Capote", in my opinion, was Hoffman's greatest role.
Truman Capote was an extremely well-known figure in his day, and he was tiny man; only 5'3", very light-boned and delicate, and pixie-like in his youth. Capote had a light, high voice with a pronounced speech defect and a strange combination of a southern accent and gay exaggerations.
Hoffman was around 6', a real moose who was heavy-boned and heavy featured, was a baritone, and a northerner who looked nothing at all like Capote, but managed to became Capote convincingly. His mimicry amazed me with its depth and accuracy. He won a well-deserved Oscar for his performance.
'Capote' was one of those films that had a doppleganger that came out at the same time. 'Infamous' was also about Truman Capote and the years the writer spent writing In Cold Blood. The two were identical in their plot and approach.
Toby Jones, who's an excellent British actor, also did a good portrayal of Truman Capote, and Jones bears a much stronger physical resemblance to the man, but Jones merely played him. Hoffman became him, and stole the entire movie.
