Oops, you’re right, this will be the first remake. Pet Sematary 2 was a sequel. The cat in this remake is not as cute as the original ( pre-resurrection lol). Probably for the better for a horror movie I guess.

Here is an insightful interview of the lead actor about the remake. It appears to be truer to the novel in some aspects, but depart majorly from it in others.

Jason Clarke on Pet Sematary and His Love for the Book | Collider

The remake seems to be more subtle in its horror, with more room for audience interpretation, which I prefer. Less spoon feeding, in-your-face horror telling you how you should feel allows for more complexity and realism, which makes it all the more terrifying.

Some films are better appreciated if the novel version is read first, and I think this remake is one of them.

I read this thread yesterday. I neither read nor saw the original book or movie but after reading so many good posts about the book, I ordered the Kindle version of it. I got up to chapter 6, plus the introduction by King and my eyes were weary. Never fear....Alexa read me chapter 7!! Ain't technology great sometimes??

So I’ve already bought my tickets for this weekend AND I rewatched the original movie a few days ago so that it would be fresh in my mind for comparison purposes. I’m ready!

Yeah, I was surprised by the changes because I didn’t read any spoilers beforehand. I thought the original film was better overall, but I don’t think the remake was a complete waste of time. My main complaint would be that I don’t think Church got enough screen time and the
Spoiler
dead, twisted back sister got too much screen time and wasn’t nearly as creepy as the original.

Finally saw this. Meh.

The cast was really, really good. Fantastic actors in this movie. Even the kids.

Unfortunately, the script never gave them much to do. Director also didn't seem to get how to pace a horror movie or handle exposition.

I know my opinion is very shaded by my appreciation for the book, but the movie's story was incredibly shallow. No sense of building dread and horror. Even the tragedy seemed a little perfunctory.

So if you admire good acting, this movie is worth watching. The cast is really excellent. Everything else ... ? Pass.

Finally saw it on dvd.

Loved the book as a kid, but honestly don’t really remember much of its premise, other than it had to do with haunted cats (and part 2 had to do with haunted/possessed dogs). I just remember it being scary and really good.

So I only judged the movie in a vacuum, and not based on the book. Honestly, I didn’t really like it at all. I guess it wasn’t terrible, but wasn’t memorable at all to me. Definitely glad I didn’t waste money seeing it in the theater.
