Im looking forward to seeing it, but a few comments from those who have seen it are, say its like a long commercial for the military defense complex!! (or 'military porn') LOL
As a fan of military movies, especially submarine/Navy movies, I enjoyed it! The acting was a little over the top in parts, and the outdoor CGI environments looked pretty cheesy, but overall an enjoyable movie.
I also appreciated the pro-American tone throughout, which is something you seldom see from Hollywood anymore. Very refreshing!
Looking forward to more of these hopefully. Crossing fingers Top Gun 2 will be good!

The Navy actually played a large part in helping to shoot it
978 reviews so far. May be a good movie but it is not killing it at the box office.
Eh, sometimes submarine movies do, sometimes not.
I appreciate this thread, because 1) I love submarine movies; 2) had not heard of this one until this thread(!) 3) comes out prior to Halloween; 4) I have a tradition of spending Halloween night at the movies, preferably iPic (upscale experience), and lo and behold my local iPic has this one starting.
Ticket bought, for a supper onsite (they serve in the seats), and avoiding the Halloween mess that is my area. It's not a disaster, just a bit hectic, and with no use for children (or adults, for that matter) better for all if I'm somewhere else.
Back to the point: my personal favorite submarine movie, by a long shot, is Crimson Tide (1995). The story is interesting, the USN at the time when questioned poo-poohed it and grinned, "could never happen like that" to which I quietly replied "whew!" (conflicting orders to launch nuclear missiles). I remember seeing this in the theater when it came out, and seemed all too plausible given geopolitics at that time.
As much as the interesting effects, for that one highlight was the interplay between the Exec Officer (Denzel Washington) going up against the Captain (Gene Hackman). Which man is right, which set of orders to follow? Both, or neither? Is there a villain, and a hero, in this case?
Best supporting part was surprise scene-stealer Danny Nucci as head Sonarman Rivetti.... "Con, Sonar: Holy **** sir, the Akula: he's back, and right on us! He's turning towards, range 600 yards,....torpedo in the water, bearing 341! Second torpedo in the water, bearing 342!" ...and etc. He put some real "punch" into the role.
Best line: Sonarman: "Why don't we shoot back?!" Rivetti: "'Cause it takes a thousand yards for our torpedoes to arm, jeez who did you **** to get on this ship?!"
A real nail-biter, that one, in my view. Hope this one is at least decent. I think "the bar" is both Das Boot (gritty, fascinating for sure) and "Hunt for Red October" which I don't like as much, though objectively probably a "better" story.

All three mentioned movies are pretty awesome. Capturing the tension of a sub in active battle is a bit unique. Thinking Das Boot did it the best, recommending it in German with English sub-titles for the American audience. Hearing the real voices was better for me.
After all these years Run Silent, Run Deep is still my go to sub movie.
For a Scot, Gerard Butler seems to be all over the rah, rah, Team America type roles. When I get a day off I just might give a Hunter Killer matinee a try instead of waiting on home video.
