OCD me, I watched it twice this weekend -- for several different reasons. Once, because I just wanted to see it again, and get my husband to watch it from start to finish (he kept catching pieces of it), and the second time because I wanted to watch for things in specific scenes. I did not realize, until I read a review, that Prudence, in her cheering outfit, is wrestling with her sexuality. I thought she envied the other girl her boyfriend, not the girl, but then, this is coming from the viewpoint of a heterosexual.

It's fun for me, a lot of times, to read reviews of films, and then go back and look for the things I missed. Easier to do if I actually own the film. That, and I knew when I saw it in the theater, that it was one of a handful of films that I would enjoy actually owning, too.

It was fun to let the film start a discussion, or a question-and-answer session, with my spouse who is 7 years my SR. To put it in perspective, he would have been 20 in 1968, while I would have been just 13 -- but I was a very active, well-informed, budding teenager, and by the time I was in HS, I WAS much like Lucy with her antiwar activities.

And now, I know I'll be watching it yet again, just to look for all of the guest appearances, aside from the more obvious ones, like Bono and Joe Cocker. In the list of credits, I noted a few others that surprised me -- where are they? Jay Leno, Selma Hayek, for starters.

Across the Universe is largely, I think, just a fun movie, too. What did BlueWillowPlate say? "A fun ride," I think. Yes indeed -- much like getting on the roller coaster that was the 1960s-70s, but at my 2008 pace now.

Eddie Izzard is a hoot, isn't he? Jay Leno has a bit part, real bit, where he walks across the street. I looked for him when I watched it yesterday afternoon, specifically looking for Leno crossing a street but I had no luck. Reminds me of the fun, looking for Hitchcock's appearances, or even Stephen King's, in films.

Selma Hayek is one of the nurses in the hospital scene with Max, and the song "Happiness is a Warm Gun." I'll have to check-out which one. I love the image of the girl in the blue syringe -- reminds me of one of those old 007 movies with the Bond girl in the wild opening(s) of the movie(s). I just can't remember which Bond movie.

Default Check out the special features DVD

Because I own a copy of Across the Universe, I also have a DVD that came with the film, which features all sorts of extras. These, I watched earlier today, and what fun! 'Two thumbs up,' as Ebert says.

Some great extra footage, including interviews with the director, Julie Taymoor, and her discussion of what she envisioned the film to be, some clowning-around with the actors and actresses, and features including the FX and the choreographer. Eddie Izzard is interviewed, as is Bono.

Well worth watching this, too.
