This is a profile of director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall), and even if you don't bother reading long-form journalism, you might enjoy the eclectic list of all the movie moments he thanks in the first paragraph.
Sam Mendes’s Directorial Discoveries For screen and stage, Mendes works like a sculptor—continually molding and remolding space, speech, and gesture

Mendes is over-rated. He's better at visuals than story (kinda like Ridley Scott). AMERCIAN BEAUTY has not aged well. The more I have re-watched that movie, the less I like it. ROAD TO PERDITION was great, but it was based on a great graphic novel. I have never been able to make it through all of REVOLUTIONARY ROAD. Zzzzz. AWAY WE GO was painful, despite the great cast. SKYFALL was okay. SPECTRE was a little less than okay.
