The Piano Teacher - another strong character by Huppert. She has got to be one of the best actresses ever!
In My Skin - this film was hard to watch, but fascinating. Anyone who wants to see it has to have a strong stomach. It deals with a masochistic woman who cuts pieces of her skin for thrills.
Love Daniel Autielle... we'll check out Apres Vous.

Ah ... love him. My (guilty) favorite is Romuald et Juliette (a.k.a. Mama, There's a Man in Your Bed)

I've seen several of those you listed, but especially loved Rififi.
So influential, but not widely known in the States.
How about Le Samourai?
Also Le Cercle Rouge.

Yes, Le Samourai was excellent, but I haven't seen Le Cercle Rouge ... yet! Two other good Jean-Pierre Melville movies are Bob le flambeur and Le Doulos. Along with Le Samourai, these are all three pretty straightforward crime thrillers which should be very easily consumed by American audiences.

I'll check out your recs.
I think that Jim Jarmusch was definitely influenced by Le Samourai when he made Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai. Too many people don't know that, though.
