Do not usually care for anti war war movies, but The Guns of Navarone is a notable exception, and perhaps my all time favorite, although several others rate very highly.Dazzling special effects and a superb musical score by Dmitri Tiomkin support the outstanding cast that has several major stars.

Full Metal Jacket because it was the most realistic. Apocalypse Now because it was the most artistic and poetic. Saving Private Ryan because it was the most brutal.

What are your favorite war movies?

I think Saving Private Ryan is about the best one to have come out recently. One of my favorite older war movies is Midway. Both of these were about WWII. How about movies about other wars? There are lots of others out there that are great, too. What do you all think?
I'd say PATTON, The Battle of the Bulge and The Dirty Dozen. For a different appeal...Kelly's Heroes and the BEST war movie I have seen....Das Boot....
YouTube - Das Boot (Trailer) a very riveting and stunningly done foreign film; from the German perspective in WWII.

I very much enjoyed The Thin Red Line by Terrence Malick.
While a specific war (The Battle of Guadalcanal- WWII) serves as the setting, more a philosophical and reflective observation of war in general.

Trailer:

Beautiful, beautiful score:
