OK all my Pans Labirynth fans, anyone see this yet ? Do I have to see Hellboy 1 first or does it stand on its own? The previews at the theater looked amazing.

Look at this review. I think it answers all your questions and praises the film.

Hellboy 1 was on the other nite, and since he LOVED it, I took my son to see Hellboy 2 and it was fun. I was cautious because of Pans Lab which I did not let him see. But this was alot of fun, (rather corny) great imaginative creatures and a good popcorn summer movie for us.

I didn't see the first Hellboy but I liked Hellboy 2. I like that character...a lot more than Batman.

I saw Hellboy 2 over the weekend. It was good. You could watch it without seeing the first one and still easily follow what was going on. But if you liked the first Hellboy, you will like the second one.

Ohhh yeah In fact, some reviewers compare the Troll Market scene to the Star Wars cantina scene. Personally, I think it was a bit overdone; Del Toro must have been given a big budget for S/FX and decided to use every penny. Maybe that was to make up for the penny pinching he had to do on "Pan's Labyrinth" - though PL shows just what kind of magic can be accomplished with little $$ but a lot of imagination

Red and Liz have definitely got a thing going on, though he is discovering that having a mate is a lot more complicated than just loving a woman from afar. Abe falls head over fins in love (as much as I worship Doug Jones for the outstanding characters he created in PL, I'm a bit let down by him in this film. I think it's because he is using his own voice. Again, as much as I looked forward to hearing his true vocalization, I think David Hyde Pierce adds just a certain something to the character with his intonations). Jones also played the Angel of Death, a character - for all its brief appearance - that was quite impressive. Here, with Jones just concentrating on body language - his best talent, IMO - he created a sensuous, androgynous VERY CREEPY character. I'm reminded of the near-dancing moves the Faun made in Pan's Labyrinth by how the Angel of Death swayed and twined.

Overall, it was a good film; one that will be added to our collection. Maybe when I get a chance to see it on DVD - PLUS the extra features sure to be included - I'll like it more.
