6 year old topic, but there's an interesting story behind this movie.. It was supposedly originally shot as "Smokey IS the Bandit"
Jackie Gleason was playing dual roles as Smokey and as the Bandit.. Apparently that sucked, so they brought in Jerry Reed to play the bandit parts, and the mess that was released is what you got.
Gleason playing a dual role I can see as a confusing mess.. They should have just brought him in as 'the bandit' and had Jerry Reed be the antagonist trying to stop him with all his trucking buddies. That might have worked.. Certainly couldn't have been any worse.
Oh I see what your saying..... In Part 3 Burt isnt in it.......
Yeah, they basically used Reed as a fill-in for the absentee Bandit. Reed had essentially the same clothes, car, and it looked like he dyed his mustache dark too. The plot was that Reed was a decoy to prevent Buford from winning a Bandit bet/reward. But it was an obvious method to recreate the dynamic of the first two movies without Reynolds. Reynolds only showed up briefly at the end, in a Buford' hallucination.
I know this movie was universally disliked & ignored; but I liked it, thought it was funny.
