Okay,
Let me start by saying this thread isn't meant to separate black movies from white movies, I don't have any hidden racist feelings I'm trying to suppress, this has nothing to do with the election - just an observation I made and wanted to discuss. Please don't be offended or call the PC police on me. Please.

Anyway, I probably first learned about Tyler Perry through the Madea stage plays that were circulating around my church. So when Diary Of A Mad Black Womanshowed up at the theater, I ran to see it - theater was probably full of black people. But as the movies kept coming; Family Reunion, Daddy's Little Girls, Why Did I Get Married, Meet The Browns - I noticed the movies kept getting better and the audience being more diverse.

So when I went to see The Family That Preys on opening night I was thrilled to see it was a very diverse crowd and that the first 3 shows had sold out.

Now the reason I started this thread is because in all my life, I've never seen a movie with an all-black or even majority black cast that drew such diverse crowds and I think it's great. Also I'm hoping that these type of movies will continue to surface because I think it's great to be able to see people like myself in Christmas movies, comedies and drama on the big screen without all the sex, violence and adult language that seems to plague black films.

Has anybody seen any of Tyler Perry's movies? Likes? Dislikes?

As a white woman w/a white husband I can tell you we LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Tyler Perry movies. When the come out on video that's the first movie we rent.

His movies alot of times deal w/REAL issues, regardless of color.

My fave is Why Did I Get Married (I cried when Janet Jackson and her hubby were talking about the death of their child) and when the big woman ended up w/the cop.. soooooo cute

My hubbies fave is Daddies LIttle Girl. For him that related to his own life and my stepchildren.

I really enjoy Tyler Perry's movies. (I'm a white woman.) I have Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea's Family Reunion and Why Did I Get Married? on DVD. Great movies. I saw Why Did I Get Married? at the theater with my mom. I think we were the only white people there. lol My mom loves Tyler Perry.

honestly, I've been avoiding Tyler Perry movies since I'm sick of the whole "black man as a fat black woman" shtick after Eddie Murphy ran it into the ground. however, I've heard nothing but good things about "Daddy's Little Girls" and have been meaning to watch it.

as a OT side note, I tend not to flock to black media, whether it be BET, Essence magazine, or movies and books marketed towards the black community. I have NOTHING against them and do enjoy them at times, but overall, I don't take them in as much as some other black people seem to do (I'm a bit more diverse in my media options, but there are some blacks I know that ONLY read books in the AA section, or only watch movies w/ a majority black cast, for example)

The thing w/Madea though is she/he is a family figure... someone the others look up to unlike Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence depictions

Check out all of his movies. You'd be pleasantly surprised.

I like BET for some things. I don't watch it because it's black (i'm white) but just because I'm interested in some of the movies.

I really enjoy anything by the Wayans and I loved Baby Boy. One of my all time fave show is/was Living Single.

IMO it's not a black/white issue but an entertainment issue.

Madea's isn't really as prominent in the movies as she is in the plays. I think the main reason she was in the first 2 is because the fan base expected it, but she's not in Daddy's Little Girls, Why Did I Get Married, or The Family That Preys. If you haven't seen the Family That Preys I highly recommend it.I just think Tyler Perry is a breath of fresh air at the box office - I liked This Christmas too; it was kinda like the clean side of Soul Food. I plan on buying the DVD this year.

As far as BET, I hardly ever watch that channel because I've found that the stuff that show is usually the stuff I don't want to see. I have nothing against movies like Boyz In The Hood or Menace to Society; but I don't think Belly, State Property 2 and the other bootleg movies starring a bunch of rappers qualify as "black"busters.

Thanks for commenting.

Same here...and you're right, most of the themes are universal, not 'black'.
Two TP scenes that stuck with me...in 'Diary', the redemption scene in the church always makes me cry. And I love it in 'Reunion' when Cicely Tyson tells off the young folks at the reunion..."You are NOT your thighs and hips!"

That's one of the reasons I love Tyler Perry, because his movies point out that we have regular lives just like everybody else. I just got soooo sick of every box-office movie being a comedy, a bunch of dancing or some shoot-em up . IO hope other directors, screenwriters take notice of this and we get a whole crop of positive, good movies next year. I know Madea goes to Jail is coming out next year, but I didn't like that play so I'm not super excited about that.

I think my favorite scene in Family Reunion is when the lady smokes the weed and sees the "rabbits" I love what she does with her eyes.

That cracked me up, too! Some lines I love from Diary:

"When are you gonna come back to church, Madea?"
"I'll come back when they put in a smoking section"

"I know Tae-Kwon-Do"
"And I know Whoop-Yo-Ass"

"I've got Viagra..."
"And I've got mace..."

"You ain't never had no greens like these before...I put my foot in 'em"

I understand what you are saying but there are plenty of black actors..
Most black film seems to fit into the comedy or action genre and it..
Would be good to see more serious films and drama's.
Im a fan of Spike Lee's films but he seems pretty fixated on race issues.
I think it is safe to say black women are under-represented in film.
Honestly i havent seen Tyler Perrys films but i will check them out.
I hope its better than a sitcom i recently saw on TV written by him...
It was Horrible even by sitcom standards!
