Default "The Man Who Would Be King"

I was just reminded of this the other day, always been one of my favorites. Christopher Plummer was on "Morning Joe" and Mike Barnicle stated that "Man/King" is one of the top 5 movies of all time. I think I have to agree.

I've been reading "Have You Seen" by David Thompson, it's a great book about 1,000 movies. Although sometimes when you've finished reading his write up you're not sure if you should rent it or not. He's a Brit and he does have some movies in the book that aren't available. But he does get into a lot of detail about how a movie came to be made, who was cinematographer, who got writing credits or was sleeping with whom on the set!

I had already known that John Huston had tried for 30 years to get the movie made and had lots of scripts laying around for it. When he had enough stroke to do it it was offered to Newman/Redford (this was early '70s) and Paul Newman (to his everlasting credit) read part of it and said; "they're British, it has to be Connery and Caine". It was and it's great!

It is in my top five fave movies of all time. The story is so well written, well acted, and well shot. Even as a female, I felt the sense of adventure and desire the fellas felt as the story unfolds. It did a great job of showing how dangerous it can be when you start to believe you are invincible, as well, that one woman can be the fall of a man. I am surprised by how few people have ever even heard of this movie - it is a true gem.

It also was the first time I had heard of the freemasons
