bad. very, very bad. though the basic training portion of the movie is funny at times, as a whole, being a military man, there are too many inconsistancies with reality that go beyond suspension of disbelief. the part that bugged me the most was how all the recruits except for the two lead characters get their heads shaved bald as all recruits do, yet they just take a little off the sides of the two lead characters.
Sorry if I give offense but you need to lighten up a bit. This movie was not meant to even come close to reality. I can see having a complaint about realism with a movie like Platoon or FMJ but this is an Ivan Reitman comedy for Pete's sake!
Speaking of FMJ, what a lot of you are saying about Stripes reminds me of that movie. Should have ended after Pyle blew his brains out and not bothered with going to Vietnam. The only scenes worth a damn afterwards were "Me So Horny" and "no boom boom soul brother".

Sure. And if the tone of the entire movie had been even, it might have worked.
But the first 2/3 of Stripes are a screwball comedy about two struggling guys who join the Army. Shenanigans ensue. It's classic comedy.
But then the last third of the movie is this weird aside where the platoon goes to Germany and steals a top-secret military device that looks like an RV. It's like an ending to a different movie.
The first 2/3 of STRIPES are great Reitman. The last third is bad Mel Brooks.

I love Bill Murray and I liked this movie, its not his best but its still a great one in my opinion.I think the his best movie is either scrooged or groundhog day, although I thought the man who knew too little was side splitting!
People here are pretty negative about it, but I think this is one of the funniest movies of all time. First 2/3 are better, but ending is also funny. Very quotable "Anyone touches my stuff, I'll kill you." "Where the ***** my truck?!" Hard to stop laughing.
I did watch the original and I thought it was a great movie, I thought it was overall a better movie than the sequel but the sequel IMO is a fun movie to watch
