I found the book far less interesting than the movie - and Fitzgerald's original story was so short, simple and so different to the movie that they are two completely separate things, apart from the concept of aging in reverse.

The original was set in Baltimore MA, and apparently shot in New Orleans to take advantage of the state's cheap film production costs. I don't know if the Katrina background was necessary, but I think the contrast of the growing chaos outside the window, with the slow progress toward death inside, was quite moving.

Yes. I loved this film (and did not expect to from what I'd heard/read). It did remind me of Edward Scissorhands, for some reason...Winona Ryder's remembrance of her truest love in old age through a flashback. Have not read Fitzgerald's book, however. I thought Julia Ormond was phenomenal.
