Favorite "escape" movies?
Indulge me if you will. I've often thought that if I hosted a film festival, the theme would be "escape" movies, in the broadest sense.
So many come to mind ... Midnight Express ... Cool Hand Luke ... Cuckoo's Nest ... Texas Chain Saw Massacre ... even Awakenings ...
Please, your favorites?

Great topic.
One of my favorites was Escape From Alcatraz, based on a true story.
Another was Escape from Sobibor, also based on a true WWII story about Jews and others escaping from a Nazi death camp.
Finally, Le Trou, an old French movie, about another prison break-out.

You got my top 3 pretty much ! I also love "La Grande Vadrouille" one of France's greatest comedy set in WW2 about a couple of hapless chaps trying to help some American and British Parachutists escape the Germans across France.
"Papillon" is excellent too ( as is the book)

I've never seen this film, I'll have to try and find it.

Definitely, both are--kinda sad, too.
I enjoy escape movies as much as heist movies. I love the methodical approach, observing how the characters solve the most insurmountable obstacles.
At Alcatraz, you can still see the dummies that the prisoners created and left behind in their beds to fool the guards.

"The Parent Trap" - either version (but my fave is the last one with Lindsey Lohan) - pure fantasy and a wonderful romantic comedy.

Thanks all. What great suggestions. Gosh, I'd totally forgotten about Papillon. Just added it to Netfilx and can't wait to see how it's aged.
Thinking about it, I'd add "The Great Escape", of course, and maybe "Into the Wild" to bring it more current. Who knows, does "Leaving Las Vegas" qualify?

I know it's new, but the newest Ocean's 11 is the most entertaining escape move.
