Default WORST BEST Picture Winners

WORST Best Picture Winners
SO when they handed out the Oscars for Best Picture over the past 80 some odd years, they messed up a few times
Obviously number one would be giving a statue to How Green Was My Valley in '41 , an average social drama when also on the list was Citizen Kane, which has become accepted by most critics, professors and film students as the ggreatest film ever (so far)

SO adding to that list, I present 9 other really not so best films that somehow walked off with the Best Picture Oscar.
OF COURSE I want your opinion, which is why I am doing this
9 Greatest Show on Earth (can you say the CHEESIEST SHOW ON EARTH?)
8 West Side Story OK Yes Great Film, but Cheesy Musical>? It's place here keeps Chicago off the list
7 Out Of Africa Uh...was something interesting supposed to happen????
6 Terms OF Endearment SO just because Jack Nicholson is in something it has to win????
5 Around the World in 80 Days Proabbaly best for the 8 to 12 year old crowd
4 The Sting OK It was Entertaining...was 73 a bad year for film though>? best Picture? should have been The Exorcist
3 Chariots of Fire We have been round and round on this one I like this film it has a great story and a great Moral to it BUT it has very shallow character development compared with the other winners
2 Another one where someone is going to say NO NO Rocky
and at number one, the worst of the worst
1 The English Patient what a boring dull useless waste of film...as Elaine Benes in Seinfeld said "Just Die Already!" Watching this film was as painful as watching death.

So please Post your opinions what did I miss ? Remember please, to be on this list, the film had to win best picture.

79 Years of Best Picture Winners in Posters » Movie Poster Addict

The award process is an insider recognition award. If the film did well, the producer, director, and primary actors are well-liked, then the film has a chance. Orson Wells was a self-promoting upstart and not an insider. How Green Was My Valley actually does hold up well. As for Citizen Kane being the best film ever? I think not. It makes my top 100 list, but not the top ten, if for no other reason than the film resorts to the lame technique of shouting lines to generate interest.

You obviously never saw "Around the World in 80 Days" in ToddAO. Michael Todd was a genius and the film explored the wide-wide screen format. If it had caught on, it would have been the IMAX of the 1950s. The story of that format is sad, and Todd eventually tried to make a mark in motion simulator technology with a 60 fps gorgeous image. That best picture award was the highlight of his career.

"Out of Africa" I played this film to packed houses side by side with "Color Purple." "Out of Africa" has one of the best opening sequences I've ever seen in a film, pure visual poetry along with stunning photography. The film itself is more of a chick flick for Streep and Redford fans.

Worst Best Film? "Ordinary People" has to be right up there. ORDINARY??? The characters were "ORDINARY" people??? Oh Puh-leeese. If rich spoiled egotists are ordinary, then I guess the title makes sense. If it was "Grapes of Wrath" the writer and director would have the Joads traveling from the dust bowl in a $500,000 RV.

There were a lot of films that missed out. "Annie Hall" beat out "Star Wars." La-de-dah, La-de-dah. The quintessential action adventure film, boxoffice high grosser, character archetype development courtesy of the renowned Joseph Campbell, source of billions in franchises and sequels, beat out by a scene with a lobster?

The only people who really take the awards seriously are the studios who hope to increase income with subsequent re-releases and DVD sales.

I having nothing but disdain for the Oscars. George C. Scott was right! If only more filmmakers had his wisdom and guts.

Hands down it is "No Country For Old Men" for me. Decent flick, but best picture???? I still can't believe that happened!

I also have to say that "The English Patient" is so brutally boring that not even I have finished watching it after several attempts, and I really like the actors in that movie.

I'll definitely go along with you on these three. I don't know which of them was the most boring.
