Ernest Borgnine. From Here To Eternity, The Poseidon Adventure, Bad Day at Black Rock, his one starring role that I know of was Marty, 1955. Still around too, and that's nice to know...
Thanks quiet walker for reminding us all how great Slim Pickens was. I once read an interview with his widow and she said he once lamented, "I've made ??? 70+ ??? movies and all anyone remembers is dropping the bomb and dropping the "N" bomb".
Beah Richards was a name I wasn't familiar with until I saw a documentary a few years ago and realized that the actress, poet, activist profiled was the one I'd admired so much in two great movies, In the Heat of the Night and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. I was able to locate her scene from the classic, In the Heat of the Night with Sidney Poitier. (By the way if any of you are as hooked on this movie as I am, you can watch the entire thing free on-line in ten minute increments. For now, check out this lady in her one and only scene in the movie. It starts about one minute, 40 sec's in.
Jo Van Fleet was in Wild River, the Elia Kazan movie with Montgomery Clift and Lee Remick, East of Eden with James Dean, and she played that great one scene as Paul Newman's mother Arletta, in Cool Hand Luke.
I was watching an episode of Seinfeld last night, with Grace Zabriskie as Susan's mother. As always, she was fabulous.
Another great character actor is Ed Herrmann. I couldn't tell you offhand where I've seen him, other than as the crooked FBI guy in the rather forgettable The Man with One Red Shoe, but he's another one that's been in nearly every TV show and a boatload of movies.
