I think Cohen is influenced by both of those comedians.
Check out this behind-the-scenes look at filming Brüno.
Some of it is pretty funny, some of it is kinda scary.

Wow - what a great article. The DVD of the movie with deleted scenes and commentary is going to be awesome.

Omg Borat is sooooooooo funny....he's in love with Pamala Anderson and thinks she is a virgin and trys to find her to marry her. lol

lakefront is on a distinguished road
A.O. Scott said it best--
It should be noted that Mr. Baron Cohen remains a brilliant slapstick artist and a master of voices — Brüno’s mock-German and scrambled American idioms are in some ways even more crazily spot-on than Borat’s gibberish — and a performer of no small discipline and physical courage. He is able to stay in character even, for example, when a naked woman is flogging him with a belt.

Baron Cohen has balls the size of King Kong's! Bruno certainly pushed the envelope. I laughed my arse off. Almost as funny as the movie itself was the rest of the crowd watching it. There have been some criticisms that Bruno is too much Borat v. 2.0 and therefore lazy and pandering blah blah, but IMO Bruno is far and away the pick of the two. I actually thought it spared the audience some of the yucky over-awkwardness of Borat (like the poo in a bag), and was more of a laugh.

I only wish it had been longer and less clipped. Sacha struck gold jabbing at the vacuousness of celebrity and fashion with some of his earlier Bruno renditions, and I don't think I would've appreciated this Bruno as much without having seen the Bruno from the Ali G days, ie -->

YouTube - Bruno (Sasha Baron Cohen - Ali G) in fashion show

Spoilers -->

-Hilarious when he referred to Mel Gibson as der Führer.
-The stage parents .

-Did anyone notice that a few things that are in the trailer/previews are not in the final movie? There's no Sears scene. No "we're looking for a locksmith," no riding an escalator at a mall...

Saw it. Totally enjoyed it. If it was a tad less funny than Borat, it made up for it in being far more outrageous. I've never seen a movie push the envelope like this one did...and the irreverant side of me love it.

BUT HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SOMEBODY! ANYBODY!

tell me how: how does Sasha Baron Cohen and crew do it?

I just don't get it. How do you shoot candid shots that have to produce high quality video with a camera that must be hidden and small? Who shoots these shots? Where is the camera and who is holding it? And what type of security is there to protect against camping out with rednecks, having Mr. Straight in the ring turn into Mr. Gay, and going to a house where swingers are swinging? Hell, I'm still not sure how they got the baby back from the t.v. show.

Does anyone have any idea on how they pull this off?

That naked woman with the belt was flippin' SCARY!!!

I liked the supermodel at the beginning. I loved that dialogue and how "scary" turns are.

I just loved everything. It was done so well. Yes, there were people in the theater who got up and walked out, but I just thought it was friggin' hilarious!

Read the link I posted earlier in the thread.

He is brave. He could have gotten his ass kicked or been killed in numerous situations throughout this movie. That swinger lady though ... man! She was going for it!
