We used to make so many high quality movies that I am still catching up. Now we tend to rely more on sequels and the super hero genre.
Sequels require very little creativity and imagination. The same holds true for super hero movies which are generally an orgy of eye popping CGI special effects.
With all of the streaming options and the internet at your fingertips, if the only movies you can find are superheroes and sequels you're not looking very hard.

I like to see good, new movies at the theater. I mostly see offerings such as described in post #1.

A decline from when? There have always been dumb, crappy, unmemorable movies made. They're not the ones that get talked about years later.
If you want something non-mainstream, you won't find that at your average mall theater. Go to your nearest college campus film series or art house theater.

I left the wrong impression so far. I like mainstream movies that are well made with a focus on details. A few that just popped into my head: Fargo, No Country for Old Men, Sicario, and Hacksaw Ridge. Dark movies with a strong focus on realism.
Not as many distributors compared to past decades. Studios like Paramount and Warner closed their independent labels, as they target major movies for the global (China) audience. It doesn't help that one of the prominent distributors and financiers of independent film was coincidentally one of the filthiest people in Hollywood. So it's harder for a filmmaker or writer etc. to get wide exposure from a small film, no matter how promising it is.
The new movies that try to be innovative are mostly found on Netflix and Amazon. They either debuted on those services, or they found a greater audience there after a very short and limited theatrical run. You just have to know what to look for, and avoid the misinformation on the Internet.
