I saw it yesterday. I didn't know if I would like it when I went, but I had already walked out of Inglourious Basterds 2 weeks earlier. I figured I better stay and watch District 9 all the way thru. I ended up enjoying this film. It was a film made in a different format sort of Documentary at times, but still enjoyable. Its not a film I would bring young kids to though.

Saw this yesterday... overall good movie, enjoyed it - interesting story. But had trouble connecting w/ the main human character Wikus; good acting, and caught some of his issues, but as a 'person', just really didn't get into him. Could detect the correlation w/ the racist issues/troubles of South Africa in the film. Very good special effects.

"Christopher Johnson"
I actually thought the opening sequence was very funny (but I was the only one laughing in the theater?). I have a dark (dark) sense of humor.

I liked the movie, but my mother wanted to see it and I convinced her to wait for the DVD. I just don't think she could take it in the theater. Between the gore, the violence, the South African accents, the aliens sounds, the constant f-words, the shaky cam, the vomiting, the voodoo, the animal carcasses, etc... I just think she'd be overwhelmed for 2 hours of that. Don't want to take her to see it only to have her want to walk out midway. I keep hearing "is it OK to take the kids?" when people should be wondering "Is it OK to take older people?"

Its strange how each of us reacts to violence on the screen. Your description of District 9 is right on target. Im probably in your mothers age group, and age does have alot to do with how we react. I was able to enjoy District 9 and I am not into violent movies. I however could not take Inglourious Basterds because of its content, and walked out of that movie. Perhaps there is just something about District 9 that captivates us for awhile I don't know. I did enjoy the movie, and I have a feeling there will probably be a sequel to it.

Yeah, I guess I managed to scare my mom away from seeing it in the theater (gahhh, now I feel guilty) but I guess I just wasn't optimistic about her ability to process all that and still enjoy the themes. I generally don't care for violent movies myself, but I had heard so much good about the movie, so I walked in to the theater and sat there waiting for it to start and wondering if *I* was going to be able to take it - and it was fine, but I'm a little jaded to screen violence I guess.
The movie really is an "experience"...

I was wondering how long it was going to take:

While I liked District 9, at the same time, I was very disappointed.
I was expecting (hoping for) a story more mysterious, more reflective, a little darker. Something in between Contact and 28 Days Later, I guess.

Loved the movie but I found it difficult to understand the speaking. Since I watched with 2 others & we saw it in parts (screening), we could compare notes on what we thought we heard/saw.
