(spoilers)

Granted, its a kids movie adaptation of a fantasy book. Im not a huge harry potter nerd or anything, and while I appreciated the story and depth and interest of the book series, I recognize it was made for kids, and well outside the 'avid sci fi/fantasy/historical fiction/history' reader demographic I fit into.

That being said, I think if you look at the movie as a follow up to the last movie, it was ok. If you look at it by itself, it was B movie grade. If you look at it as a big screen version of the book, it was horrendous.

One thing I liked about the last movie was how excellently it conveyed the wizard battle, and how it did not focus in on the 3 main characters and panned out to give me focus on the other characters (Luna, Colin, Neville, Lupin, Tonks, the death eaters etc etc).

This movie went the opposite direction, and nearly bordered on focusing the bulk of the story on the Ron.Hermione love triangle.

More, I really liked the final scene big fight at the end of the last movie. It exceeded any expectation I had. Rather than pushing that further, this movie cut the big battles out outright, only leaving a strange version of harry watching dumbeldore get murdered, which was not in the book and made him look like a coward, and watching as the death eaters just walk out of hogwarts unchecked as if the place was empty. No battling the students to fight their way out, no big fight with Hagrid in the grounds, and only a cut down version of snape dueling harry, which did not explain the title of the movie as the book did at all.

And thats not even mentioning how so much was added in that was not in the book and brought nothng to the story (and probably made it necessary to change BIG parts of the last movies to have it barely make sense). Fenrir was only barely referenced, No connection to Lupin was shown, Bill and Fleur were left out, as was Nevilles backstory as possibly being the 'real' chosen one.

I was very dissappointed, and even more dissappointed with the way critics are raving about this movie (though after they did the same with movies like Cloverfield and terminator salvation I am not surprised).

Thoughts?

I get what you're saying. This is the tricky part about hiring different directors to do on each saga--sometimes their vision veer away from the previous director's or what you're used to. If you notice in different HP movies, it's almost always done differently--style-wise. I notice on this one they focus on the Hermione-Ron love triangle but they also focused on Malfoy's transformation into a Death Eater. It's been a while since I've read the book so I don't really remember if they followed the same scenes so I'm gonna have to take your word for it. They also tone down on most of the spectacular effects compared to previous ones--I was kind of looking forward to that but I also understand the current director's vision.

Yeah I guess I was kind of underwhelmed when I saw it..but only maybe because I had certain ideas or expectations in my mind. Overall, I didn't think it was bad though. And it certainly won't shie me away from being excited about The Deathly Hallows. Looking forward to some battle scenes, I hope.

I felt like it was one of those Star wars sequels, forget which one, that just is filler with a few key scenes/discoveries and then the movie ends with indications that you have to wait to see what happens in the next sequel for the closure. I wanted my money back after seeing this latest HP movie.

Yes. Of all the Harry Potter movies this one was my least favorite. I felt that the mystery and discovery of who the half-blood prince was virtually meaningless

I was VERY let down. It was my favorite book, and the cut out SO of Voldemort's biography...it was a shame. I didn't care about Ron and his little romance, I was more interested in the villain of the saga.

I never read the books so I had nothing to go on. But you have to remember anytime you take a book & make it into a movie they are going to cut a lot. You can complain all you want about such things but in the end you know they are going to modify the movie to appeal the auidence. I liked the movies so I can't rate them against the books.

I loved the books and loved the movies, but Deathly Hallows Part l was downright boring. We saw it on IMAX and not even that helped.

I suspect if you hadn't read the books some of the movies were downright confusing. Rowling was a genius when it came to plotting and could wrap up every stray thread in her books in a very satisfying way that added to the readers enjoyment. But there's no way an hour and a half movie could include everything in her books, and as her books got thicker and more detailed, more was lost in movie translation.
