"Taking Chance" was an HBO movie ... based on a true story. Lance Corporal Chance Phelps was killed April 9, 2004 in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Kevin Bacon plays Lieutenant Colonel Michael Strobl who requests that he be assigned to escort the remains home to Dubois, Wyoming.

A Lieutenant Colonel doesn't normally handle this type of duty. The movie follows the arrival of the remains of Lance Corporal Phelps and follows his final journey home. Every step along the way Lt Col Strobl witnesses a spontaneous outpouring of support and respect for the fallen Marine.

Taking Chance" was a 2009 Sundance Film Festival Official Selection in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. Strobl recently retired after 24 years of duty.

Default The Champ

"The Champ" with little Ricky Schroeder, Faye Dunaway & Jon Voight. Faye & Jon are divorced, but they have a son, Ricky, age 6 or 7. Jon is a prize fighter, Faye is remarried to a high society guy. She left her husband & son many years before and never returned. Jon raised him among the other prize fighter families. He's a bit crude, Ricky is just delightful. Faye comes back in their lives and wants to get to know her son. The ending is heart breaking when Jon dies after a fight - Ricky just rips your heart out. Sorry to give the ending away but couldn't see any other way to explain why it was such a tear-jerker. It would be well woth your time watching it.

During my many moons on this earth have viewed many movies.

Some were adapted from a novel...others depicting a true story.

Being a Vet from WW11 and Korea can relate a little to a true war story.

"Taking Chance" is a tear jerker and hits to the heart.

Have watched it three times so far and will watch it again if I see it on the TV program schedule.

Seems like every day some serviceman is killed in Iraq or Afghanistan...as of this morning 45 have died in Aug and the month is not quite over yet... and the ritual continues on.

It sure is a tear jerker, I too have watched "Taking Chance" several times and wish we would pull all of our young men and women out of Iran and Afghanistan. Just bring them home safe and sound.

This movie is a true story and the respect that is shown to that fallen Marine by the people at the airport, the people on the airplane, the people along the route home is just overwhelming. Then his friends and family remembering the good times with Chance. It was an eye opening experience for the Lt Col.

I don't remember the film itself because I was very young at the time, but I do remember watching it with my sister and she was bawling at the end.
