This movie was dumb, too ridiculous to be scary. An actual hard to watch film... "A Serbian Film."
I prefer old slasher flicks anyways.
Wrong. If that is the case, might as well say that about 75% of all horror movies in general.
It says that you have the mental capacity to understand that you are watching a movie? If a movie causes someone to suffer from psychological damage, then I feel sorry for them.
I believe what we see can affect us despite knowing its a movie/tv/play. Perhaps not deeply or permanently..........but repeated exposure, especially exposure to things that are extreme are part of the key as are other factors unique to each individual.
We are not entirely in control of our psyche's, the outside world, including movies and tv will have impact whether you want it to or not. Whether its 'just a movie' or not. At what levels it will impact some but not others depends on the individual. If you think you are entirely in control you are naive or arrogant.
I wouldn't walk on the same side of the street as the guy who makes these movies. At some level I find these people to be social subversives and wish there was a way to make access to these movies harder. You should have to make a conscious choice and work a little harder to dig down to filth like this.

I thought A Serbian Film was really stupid. If one goes beyond an initial reaction, it was too obvious that it was trying to shock its audience (I could picture a mediocre writer thinking "I'm so not having any ideas... So what taboos does society have that I should use here, one after another?"). I find that sort of movie childish and dull.
They even sort of plagiarised (sorry: paid tribute to) an infamous scene from Nekromantik (I or II, I can't remember).

I agree that we can't really pretend that repeated exposure won't affect the individual, because it always does in a way or another. However, this kind of compulsive behaviour, unless someone is being forced to watch (in an Orange Clockwork way lol), is the consequence of something else for which movies are never to blame, IMO.
About your last paragraph: I don't think creativity should be monitored, and it's good that we're in a (relatively) free culture which caters to everyone's tastes and needs. If you're an adult and if what you're watching is fiction, your reasons are your own and it's none of my business, so why should I make it difficult for you? Some cultures banned/ban Greek mythology books because they're supposed to be immoral... I LOVE them, and I'm as moral as the next person. Likewise, my younger sister may love movies like The Human Centipede (which I found both tedious and pointless) because she thinks they're amusing and hilarious, in a twisted or revolting way. She's healthy and she likes many sort of other films.
No work of fiction is harmful per se, and if an adult person has previous issues that's what should be under control.
This said, I don't like most contemporary movies, books, etc. I believe that they have little, if anything, to do with art. No inventive storylines, no innovative visuals, no outstanding acting, trivial conclusion... Unlike you, I don't think that people who watch one "torture porn" film after another are social subversives: in my book, those movies couldn't be more reactionary (and, in most cases, juvenile), and more faithful to our establishment, thus being the opposite of countercultural.
I think your secretly and repressively fascinated by this movie and seriously want to check it out. Why don't you just go ahead and watch it already.
You know you wanna!
