When I was in junior high, back in the 70's....they showed us this very graphic (b&w) movie on the Holocaust...bodies burned, mass burials. It was so graphic that most had to look away...and by doing so, losing the chance to understand the impact of its history. IMO, 'Boy in the Striped Pajamas' would have so much more of an impact...and without the graphicness. The kids would feel the horror...instead of seeing it. You may disagree with me...but I feel that this movie should be shown in 9th or 10th grade history classes.
I agree with you. You see how the two boys, same ages, live in vastly different worlds and how the dad finally sees the inhumanity of it all when it's far too late. The conclusion of that film goes in a snap.
"Terms of Endearment"
"Imitation of Life"
"A Raising in the Sun"
"Lillies of the Field"
"A Street Car named Desire"
All of the above have had very power story lines depicting human struggle to believe in the face of impossibility, overcome adversity and survive real life sorrow. But, if the truth be told a lot of movies move me to tears for other reasons too.
The newest movie that made me cry was the Pixar movie UP (and in the first 10 minutes!). I was with my boy in the theatre but thank goodness he was to engrossed in the movie to notice me getting misty
"Imitation of Life" has everyone in a puddle on the floor when it is over. It gets really bad then it gets even worse and worser if that is a word. No let up until it's over and the credits roll.
