Many of the great contemporary actresses that come to my mind have already been named, but two fabulous ones who have not yet come up are Emily Watson and Laura Linney.

Well said, CrowGirl.
I appreciate them both but have a special fondness for Linney. Loved her in You Can Count on Me as well as The Squid and the Whale. She crackled with electricity in John Adams; it was as if she had been born for that role.
I don't always love the films she's in, and I wish she'd stop the botox, but I have really appreciated Nicole Kidman's work over the years.
Also enjoy Juliet Binoche, Kate Winslet, Julianne Moore, and especially Cate Blanchett.
Sorry to say this but I am a wee bit tired of Meryl Streep. Her portrayals get so much press that the impact of the film is diminished by the hype buzzing around Streep's latest "performance." Of course that's not her fault, but for me it has become a bit of a turn-off.
You speak French? Because I dont think she's EVER done an english speaking movie. The ONLY movie she's had any western exposure with is Chocolat which was what, 10 years ago? Not enough roles to be considered a top actress unless you are speaking only of French cinema.

I can read subtitles
She was also in Unbearbale Lightness of Being, and in English Patient, both English speaking roles.
