Default BEFORE "Avatar"; What Movie Do You Feel Had The BEST Special Effects?

In my opinion, the best special effects until "Avatar" were in "The Lord Of The Rings Triology". I was thoroughly impressed with the computer generated character "Gollum" and the complicated and large battle/seige sequences. From the lifelike rendition of "Treebeard" to the wonderful depiction of "Rivendell"; it will still be remembered for it's special effects and unique style of filming. .

So what movie would you nominate for BEST special effects until the movie release of "Avatar"? .

"House of Wax", which was also in 3-D, but back in about 1950. Nobody wanted to go to 3-D movies then, because the glasses were so dorky. But now that the glasses are cool, it's OK to go to 3-D movies. People are either nuts or stupid. Probably both. P.T. Barnum missed by several orders of magnitude. There are a thousand fools born every minute.

So true and so FUNNY!!! Basically it is the exact same process; but as you allude; These younger kids believe it is "something new"...LMAO... both your assertions are true! PS...Good pick by the way...the glasses just aren't "dorky" anymore...like they were in my day...LOL. .

I would probably agree that Lord of the Rings had the best special effects before avatar. My second would be Transformers, all the robots were cgi and looked as real as could be. Since an old movie was brought up I'll bring up one that I think doesn't get enough attention when it comes to special effects, Blade Runner. The movie was made in 1982 and I still think the effects are top notch.
