Pearl Harbor-not for the storyline but for the dramatic portrayal of what happend to the sailors and airmen that day.
Run Silent, Run Deep

I would also have to say Platoon only because as a child of the 50's and 60's, war was in black and white and cleaned up. Platoon was the first movie I saw that was graphic.

I like Tora,Tora,Tora's take on the situation leading up to Pearl Harbor. The stupidity of those in charge refusing to see what was about to happen.

Kelly's Heroes.
This was one of the first movies my husband and I went to after we were married, 40 years ago.
The cast was great, Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, Donald Sutherland..

The Thin Red Line. In my opinion, one of the best war movies, ever. Yet, it seems to fly under everyone's radar even though it got great reviews, won some Oscars, and had an all-star cast. The book of the same title is worth a read, too.

We Were Soldiers. I think the movie itself was kind of cheesy, but I like how it showed the French in the beginning and how the wives at home were also a focus.

Platoon. Definitely one of the best.

The Hurt Locker. An excellent film all around.

Glory. Great movie, bummer ending. I like that this film showed that many Northerners were upset that they were fighting to free the slaves. Nothing to be proud of, but historically accurate.

Apocalypse Now. I don't consider this to be a war film, but one of the best anyways. Man, this movie has so many great quotes that seem out-of-place, but yet add to atmosphere. "Charlie don't surf!"

Das Boot. Excellent all around.

Downfall. Another great film that flies under the radar, perhaps because it was mostly shown in 'art house theaters' in the US.

Full Metal Jacket. What more can be said?

There are probably others, but one film that I did not like: Saving Private Ryan. This had the potential to be one of, if not the greatest, story of the D-Day landing and the days preceding it, but it all got lost in the corny Hollywood story. At least Tom Hanks redeemed himself with Band of Brothers.

Not really war films, but still good:
Dr. Strangelove.
Top Secret.
Firefox.
Stripes.

Not a film, but Anthony Lyod's book My War Gone By, I Miss It So, is a really well written account of the war in Bosnia (with a side trip to Chechnya).
