A few i like are:

Cross Creek (1983) - About the northern writer who moved to the swamps of florida to write a book in solitude and instead wound up writing about the people she encountred there in the swamps that forever changed her life.

Johnny Handsome (1989) - About the facially deformed robber who recieved a new face in prison and then after he was let out he methodically went after his former robbery partners who had set him up to get caught down in New Orleans.

Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) - About the old lady in the nursing home re-telling her early life experiences when she was just a young girl back in the 1920's as her past would always come to the future when she started talking about the people and situations from back then.

Now how about your favorites ??

Love Cross Creek.
I wore out one Fried Green Tomatoes and had to buy another.
I should break down and buy Places in the Heart because it is one of my very favorite movies.
Some people like to hate on Sally Field but I loved her in this, her "You like me!" Oscar winning role.
I also enjoyed John Malkovich's portrayal of the reluctant tenant.
There were many nice touches which added depth to the ragtag collection of characters. There is a similarity to To Kill A Mockingbird, but this film has its own message, and one of the best endings I've ever seen.

In the Heat of the Night (1967)

This is very interesting because it was actually filmed in the mid 60's when the effects of the new Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts are starting to take place. The chemistry between Steiger and Portier's characters is superb.

Didn't think of that one, but that is one the best movies ever made, about anywhere! Great call QW!

I'll throw A Streetcar Named Desire in for consideration.
