We really had a lot of great, varied types of music in the 70's. Which to me was more of a spirit, or a feeling, than an exact time period. There was camaraderie, a fellowship if you will, and a hopefulness for the future. It reminds me of this painting(we've all seen it somewhere!) by Archibald Willard, The Spirit of '76.
To me, this defines what it is all about. They have all just faced major tribulations together, one of them even has a head wound, yet he is marching along playing his picolo(?), and look at his face, look at all their faces, they're smiling, playing music, and celebrating. The three in front are standing side by side(equal), the youngest one in awe of the elder who survived it all. The clouds are even starting to break. America is still very young, and we are not a perfect, but which country is? Our basic principles are sound. Freedom and Equality. What a concept! We don't always get it right, but we're still striving for that ideal. And, as long as we have survived adversity and we are still here. . . there is hope.
