Even though I came of age in the 70's, so much of the music from that time is overplayed these days that I get really sick of it.
These are a few songs which, for me, do stand the test of time.
Actually, the *entire album* that each one of these songs comes from is classic, for all time.
For me, a favorite song certainly has to grab me sonically, but the lyrics, no matter how simple, also need to be compelling. All years are approximate, but I think I am fairly accurate.
Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On('72): The lyrics are to the point, Gaye's voice has never been better, the production is just right
Neil Young's Needle and the Damage Done from Harvest('72-3), and the entire Rust Never Sleeps album ('79). Young is still consistantly cranking out good stuff, but his songs from the 70's, to me, will still sound fresh when a lot of other music gets stale.
Desperados Under the Eaves by Warren Zevon ('77). Literate, wry, total Zevon.
Snippet: "And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing
Until I pay my bill."
The Who: My favorite Who song is actually Happy Jack ('66 or 67, with Keith Moon's incredible drums) but this entire album, especially Won't Get Fooled Again,(72?) is a microcosm of everything that was good about the 70's. Too bad it's being used to market automobiles now.
Jimi Hendrix: either Purple Haze or Voodoo Chile--or maybe Are You Experienced? (69 or 70?)
Hendrix was doing something really new. He was so influential and will never be emulated. I really do not know much about playing guitar, but I still miss this guy and what he could have gone on to create.
Grateful Dead: Ripple, and the entire American Beauty album. (70 or 71) Beautiful vocals, simple, well-chosen production.
Anyone who said that those long-haired hippies could not be reflective and spiritual never listened to this music.
There are others (Led Zep, Beatles, Stones etc) but these are songs songs I never get tired of.
