I meant to post this yesterday on the anniversary. This song is written about the Soweto Uprising, considered by many to be the turning point in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. The government decided that the medium of education in all "Bantu" (black) schools should be Afrikaans. This was considered to be the language of the oppressor. On June 16, 1976 a peaceful rally was planned by the school children in opposition to this, but clashes with the police resulted in many dead, and thousands injured, mainly school children. The movie "Sarafina" was about the uprising. This famous photograph was taken on that day.
