Bill Haley & His Comets certainly made See You Later Alligator famous but it was written and first recorded by Robert Guidry, aka Bobby Charles.

I returned too late. Didn't realize I got a response. But the correct answer is Let It Be by the Beatles. It debuted on the Billboard chart at #6 in 1970, and that was the record until 1995 when Michael Jackson broke it.
