Got some old school VH playing and I gotta say, I think those first 4 or 5 albums were absolutely some of the best good ol fashioned Rock and Roll ever... every time I listen to them I just think "****" some of the best straight up rock going. Fun, party, and just lively music... nothing too heavy or political, just good backyard bar b que fun rock.
They've been partial the last few years or more to David Roth being their singer
Problem is he can't sing anymore where Sammy Hagar can sing quite well
It's doubtful Sammy will go back to the band, even if asked though. That's my take
I saw VH perform on Jimmy Kimmels show. It was awful. Diamond Dave has lost his luster and sounds like hell when he sings, wasn't even getting the lyrics right on one of the songs I saw in that performance. Sad Sad Sad.
I've always thought like I posted that early VH was some of the best rock music ever. I like Sammy's version too, but for me VH will always be that old stuff, even though Hagar and the boys made some epic tunes too... IDK... Eddy just got a little too carried away with the keyboards. Started on the 1984 album and never let up with the keyboards and I'm a purist, keyboards just don't jive with me but whatever, a lot of people don't mind them.
The material that VH released during their time with Sammy is far better in terms of songwriting and musicianship. Those four albums: 5150, 0U812, F-U-*-K and Balance hold up really well to this day. They even had better producers on the albums and their live performances were consistently better during the Sammy era.
If that band had continued on past 1984 with DLR, it would have turned into a three ring circus / Vegas sideshow. And due entirely at the time to DLR's continued presence in the band. Joining forces with Sammy enabled the band to mature and grow on a level they would have never reached with DLR.
My favorites of theirs are the debut and 1984, still listen to them quite a bit. I think I'd give a slight edge to first one. Of all their songs, this is still one of my favorites:
In my opinion, for the first DLR version, their best album was the debut. And they steadily went down from there. The Sammy era was good, but to me it just never sounded like VH. Perhaps it was the keyboards that someone mentioned earlier ... I don't really know ... but the music was never the same.
1. VH-1
2. Women and Children First
3. VH-2
4. 1984
5. Sammy's era, in any order really
6. Blah .....
First album was by far the best. After that I bought each one as it came out, but found far fewer songs to like on them. The 1984 album was a huge improvment. When 5150 came out with Sammy, I had my doubts, but I bought it and ended up liking that album a whole lot. After that, they seemed to turn the focus away from hard edged rock, songwriting was not as sharp, and I lost interest.
