HUGE blues fan - in fact once in concert I saw Muddy waters, willie dixon and big twist and the mellow fellows (anyone remember him? r.i.p), John Lee Hooker, Son Seals, albert collins, Buddy Guy.
The best way to see the blues is to go to the clubs. Support your local blues clubs! And check out those blues festivals out there! esp. in Chicago (memorial day weekend I think) and the Handy blues and bbq festival in Henderson, KY and there is a new one in Aurora IL that I missed this year (out of town).
Heard Big Twist on the local radio and immediately liked it. I play blues and am definitely into it, but:
A) I don't like ALL blues and/or the arrangements. A mediocre blues band can bore the crap out of you and that's why the blues is an art form.
B) Some "musicians" think you can learn 3 chords and get on stage as a blues band (thus attracting undiscriminating groupies). I call these people "blues haters". Others say the blues is for old people (meaning "my adolescent stuff is better").
C) A lot of artists mentioned on this thread are crossover artists (B. Raitt for sure) and this allows the blues to "stretch out" which is good.

I dragged my republican in-laws to an Allison gig in Detroit - big mistake! I liked it but they had to leave. It upset their "sensibilities" whatever they were. Well I do know - they were into elevator music and I had hoped to enlighten them.
Any other stories like this?
You may or may not like it, but here are four from my own blues group, from a performance last Saturday . . . (I know, I know, as a singer I'm a helluva guitar player . . . )
Four Until Late, "She's About a Mover" (yep, the Sir Douglas Quintet chestnut which we first did for a lark, but we've gotten to get a kick out of playing it and it's where Tex-Mex meets the blues, anyway . . .) (http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_9521178 - broken link)
Four Until Late, "Later" (this is a group composition that came out of a jam at one of our rehearsals, and we've kept it in the book ever since . . . ) (http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_9521201 - broken link)
