Mine too. I stumbled across this band signed to the seminal 4AD label not too long ago. This band kinda hits that shoegaze spot in some of their tracks...but not quite like the classic stuff. A modern take on post-shoegaze? I'm not really sure.
Old school shoegaze is making a bit of a comeback, thankfully. So far my favorite of the "nu-gaze" bands has been the Fauns. Hopefully at some point they'll leave Bristol to grace us stateside.
I've asked this question on this board before, and I'll ask it again: other than being on an independent label, what does it take to be labeled an "indie rock" band? Is there something stylistically that all indie rock bands have in common? If not, then the term "indie rock" is meaningless as a way to describe the sound of music and should just be considered a marketing term.
I wouldn't say there's anything stylistically in common for indie rock bands, except for perhaps you can trace their influences back to late 80's/early 90's (pre-grunge) college radio. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with your label, as there are lots of indie bands signing to major imprints and lots of non-indie-rock bands on independent labels.
The only way I can think of to describe it is to paraphrase the US Supreme Court's definition of pornography - "you know it when you (hear) it."
Stumbled upon some really opulent sounding music today. Those who love shoegaze, especially Robin Guthrie or Cocteau Twins, should really enjoy this one....I'm totally new to this band. Massive walls of emotive sound and gauzy vocals...breaks down into a beautiful calm...really wonderful.
Zola Jesus came into view for me last year and she completely coursed through my veins. Reminiscent of Siouxie Sioux at her most powerful....I actually posted a few of her tracks in the Goth thread at one time. This is a truly exquisite song. I can't wait for her new album Conatus.Stream thewhole album here complements of the Guardian UK. She also provided her introspection on each track...
One of the first songs I wrote for the record. In the beginning I was ready to go into the studio and make a giant upbeat pop record, but really quickly I realised that's not what was in me. The only thing coming out was this kind of raw introspection, something I had no control over - Zola Jesus on the track "Skin." Source - Guardian UK

So want to rep the above. I think those three songs, collectively, solidify the spot for "the most beautiful post", thus far, in this thread. Stunning.
Owen Ashworth is no longer performing as Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, but his albums are still some of my recent favorites. He doesn't write short songs so much as short stories. I'm looking forward to what he can do with a full band.

The thing I like the most about this song is that it's deceiving in that it sounds upbeat and I think many people may completely miss the meaning.
I like things like that...
